Research Project: Lead in Domestic Wells

A project funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has been undertaken to (1) identify predictors of water lead levels in tap water of homes that rely on private wells for drinking water, and (2) characterize the cost and efficacy of interventions designed to reduce tap water lead in homes that rely on private wells for drinking water. This project is taking place in five counties in Illinois (Champaign, Jackson, Kane, Peoria, and Whiteside). The researchers are from the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the Illinois State Water Survey in the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

This webpage contains video instructions for study participants on how to collect water samples from their kitchen tap, as well as information on how to determine if you have lead pipe in your home.
